Facts
The Greenhouse effect is the rise in temperature that the Earth experiences because certain gases in the atmosphere (water vapour, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane, for example) trap energy from the sun.
Global Warming: Global warming refers to an average increase in the Earth's temperature, which in turn causes changes in climate. A warmer Earth may lead to changes in rainfall patterns, a rise in sea level, and a wide range of impacts on plants, wildlife, and humans. When scientists talk about the issue of climate change, their concern is about global warming caused by human activities namely the emissions of greenhouse gases.
Climate change is one of the world’s most serious environmental problems. CSIRO scientists predict temperature increases of 0.4 to 2°C by 2030, and 1 to 6°C by 2070, along with an increase in the frequency and duration of extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall, floods and droughts.

Godfrey Hirst Carpets Joins Greenhouse Friendly™
Godfrey Hirst Carpets has joined the Greenhouse Friendly™ initiative and is offering customers the opportunity to purchase carbon neutral carpet and off set all emissions associated with the carpet manufacturing including:
- Wool production or oil extraction

- Carpet manufacturing process
- Dyeing
- Spinning
- Tufting
- Carpet or tile production
- Transportation
The Greenhouse Friendly™ initiative is a fully accredited scheme run by the Department of Climate Change which has assessed Godfrey Hirst Carpets life cycle analysis and emission monitoring plans.
A life cycle assessment (LCA, also known as life cycle analysis, ecobalance, and cradle-to-grave analysis) is the investigation and valuation of the environmental impacts of a given product or service caused or necessitated by its existence.
Godfrey Hirst Carpets arranged for an independent consultant to undertake a life cycle assessment on various types of carpets to determine the environmental effect or carbon foot print associated with the entire life cycle of a particular product.
Through Greenhouse Friendly™, Godfrey Hirst Carpets offer a range of carpets in respect of which it will purchase recognised ‘offset credits’ from Greenhouse Friendly™ approved abatement activities that are recognised as permanent, independently verified and within Australia.
