Together, three friends Bonnie Hindmarsh, Erin Cayless and Lana Taylor have created Three Birds Renovations, a boutique renovation company that buys, renovates and sells suburban homes in pursuit of their ambition to build a life they love.
We sat down with Bonnie to discuss their recently completed 5th house in Baulkam Hills. They chose Godfrey Hirst Belle Laminate flooring in Alpine Oak Ice Grey and it was used throughout the kitchen, living room and hallways.
What's your favourite space in this renovation?
My favourite space is the back window. I love standing at the front door and looking through to see the gorgeous window with so much light.
At what point of the process do you consider the flooring?
I usually start considering the flooring once I have established the different spaces within the home.
There are usually lots of little rooms and once I have blown out all those rooms - once I have that concept in my head - that's when I choose the flooring.
How does your colour choice impact on the design?
I think that colours have a massive impact on how you want your home to feel and the concept that you're going with.
I use a lot of white in my homes and that's because I want it to feel like I am on holidays - I want it to feel fresh, bright and calming and white does that for me.
I love the relaxed beach vibe and even though we aren't near the beach, I wanted to have that kind of vibe in the house.
What inspires you?
So many things inspire me! Hard working women and people that don't give up definitely inspire me.
From a design perspective, I find a lot of inspiration on Instagram and Pinterest and digital media.
You have renovated spaces ranging from small places right through to full houses. Where do you start?
I start by looking at the space in the sense of a family living there. I look at it functionally and then look at it from an aesthetic perspective to ensure it looks beautiful.
I try and decipher how someone would live in the space.
Can you share your 3 top tips for tackling your own renovation?
- Stick to budget: be really strict with it.
- Stick with your timeline.
Communication with your builders and trades.
What's hot right now?
Blush has gone boom! I have used it in this house a lot.
When it comes to trends, I just know what I like and I don't always know if it's on trend!
How do you know when the job is done?
I know when the job is done when I can sleep at night. Until then, it's pretty restless.
