Two Minutes with... Kyal and Kara

Kyal and Kara recently completed their Palm Springs inspired 1960s beach shack in Long Jetty. Seeing the potential and character in the original house, they transformed it into a stunning family home that radiates breezy coastal vibes.

We were thrilled that they chose two Godfrey Hirst products to feature in their reno - timber flooring Villa in Sand Drift and wool carpet Ravine in Oatmeal.

We caught up with them to find out more...

What's your favourite space in this house?

Kara: My favourite space would have to be the kitchen/living/dining room because I love the transition of that area to the outdoor area and I love that indoor-outdoor flow.

At what point do you consider the flooring?

Once our DA plans are finalised, that's when we begin to get stuck into interior selections - and for us, flooring is always the starting point. That's such a good foundation for every selection we choose from there. The flooring really does set the tone.

Why did you select the Villa floor boards?

We chose the Villa timber flooring in Sand Drift because I love the blonde finish which works perfectly with our coastal style.

From a construction point of view I love working with Godfrey Hirst flooring because it clicks together and there's no need for sanding or polishing, so you save a lot of money.

Tell us about the carpet you selected...

I'm a big fan of carpet in the bedrooms. We chose wool carpet because we love those natural properties of wool: it's soft, it's luxurious, it's durable - but it's got those insulating properties so it's warm in winter and a cool relief in summer.

We chose Ravine because I really love the texture of that loop pile. It's earthy, it's organic and it really suits our coastal style. The Oatmeal colour in particular works perfectly with our muted colour palette.

Can you give us any tips on choosing a carpet?

When selecting carpet for your own family, really have a think about how you're going to use the space. Is it going to be a high-traffic area, is there going to be lots of activity or is the space going to be somewhere where you can relax and retreat?

What is your number one tip for new renovators?

One of the biggest pieces of advice we can give is to choose your flooring and let that be the foundation for the rest of your interior selections.

We couldn't be happier with our Long Jetty renovation and a huge part of that is the flooring because it really sets the coastal tone and the palette for the rest of the renovation.
