Loui Burke, a content creator and podcaster with a stunning loft-style apartment, is making waves on TikTok and Instagram with his captivating home design and lifestyle content. Loui’s rustic yet funky interior style embraces organic fibres and textures, so we knew we would share a mutual love for wool as a natural fibre.

Loui’s content emphasises the importance of rugs, particularly those with natural fibres and textures like jute, and their warming impact on the design and feel of a space. We were so excited at the idea of transforming our wool carpet into custom rugs for his home, with its insulating properties keeping apartments like Loui’s cool in summer and warm in winter.

Finding the right size rug for a specific room can be tricky, so Loui was able to provide dimensions and custom-create a rug from our wool carpet, a service offered through our retail partners.

Loving earthy tones of cream, beige and brown, Loui received samples of our wool carpets, and decided on both Chatsworth in the colour 510 Bakewell, and Montrose in the colour 310 Saratoga.

With a love for the imperfections and textures of natural fibres, the chunky wool loop pile carpets fit the brief perfectly, feeling soft to walk on while still providing beautiful design detail to the rooms.

Earlier in May, we were fortunate enough to again host 2 groups of students from the Geelong Future Leaders of Industry (GFLOI) and Girls Leading Advanced Manufacturing (GLAM) who are interested in exploring the manufacturing industry, and the diversity of careers that it can offer. We have hosted these groups previously in 2021, and the feedback was that it was a great day to see behind the scenes one of the world’s largest flooring company and Australian manufacturers.

At the beginning of June this year, Samuel Franks was rewarded with this award recognising his studies of engineering throughout 2022. Our continuance of our support to Deakin University and their engineering students has not waivered from when we first begun over 15 years ago. In 2020, this prize was awarded to Kim Littras, who is now an electrical engineer with Godfrey Hirst and is an integral part of our factory sector.

Godfrey Hirst Australia has achieved Climate Active Carbon Neutral organisation status and are proud to be the first Australian carpet manufacturer to do so. Furthermore, Godfrey Hirst New Zealand is also now a carbon neutral organisation1.

The Australian government program Climate Active recognises businesses that take voluntary climate action to measure, reduce and offset carbon emissions. Godfrey Hirst Australia’s Climate Active membership and certified carbon neutral organisation status demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and industry leadership to drive genuine change.

One carbon offsetting project we have supported is the Yunnan Yuanjiang Lutong Hydropower Station is located in Yunnan Province, China2. &nbsp;A factor in our decision to support this project was the fact that several of our hard flooring suppliers are located in China. The project is a diversion-type run-of-river hydropower station with an installed capacity of 10MW generating approximately 52,920MWh of electricity annually. The project reduces the emission of greenhouse gases by replacing equivalent electricity from the China Southern Power Grid, which is dominated by fossil fuel-fired power plants.

Utilising water resources of the Du River and delivering an annual average of 1,105,800 MWh of electricity to the Central China Power Grid, this project upholds the UN Sustainability Development Goal of taking urgent climate action. Local electricity demand was previously supplied by the Hubei Grid, comprised predominantly of non-renewable coal power plants. This hydropower plant has a total installed capacity of 500MW and reduces the emission of greenhouse gases by replacing traditional thermal power with renewable hydropower.

Duhe Pankou Hydropower Plant Offsetting Project

One carbon offsetting project that we have supported is the ‘Carbon Conscious Carbon Capture Project 1’ which is a reforestation project across 14 properties totalling 5,700ha in the Central and Northern Agricultural Regions of Western Australia. We chose this project as a reflection of our Australian Made operations, with all of our soft floor coverings made in Australia and New Zealand. From 2009 to 2010 over 6 million native species Mallee trees planted on land previously cleared for dryland cropping and grazing. Registration as a Carbon Farming Initiative Project included commitment to maintaining the forest for a minimum of 100 years. This region in Western Australia was recognised as significantly over-cleared, and the reforestation is: providing protective habitat for native flora and fauna; reducing wind and water erosion; in some cases reducing soil salinity and some cases providing a useful environment for sheep and honey bees.

The Grand Designs Australia Magazine House of the Year Awards (HOTY) proudly puts the spotlight on residential architecture, showcasing some of the best projects created by Australian Architects. The HOTY Awards are designed to celebrate the brilliant outcomes created by Architects for their clients, resulting in an incredibly high standard of project submissions.

The Grand Designs Australia Magazine HOTY Awards is now open for nominations! The team at Grand Designs are calling on Australian architects to enter their best residential projects to win this prestigious award and huge exposure through Grand Designs Australia Magazine and associated social media channels. The awards are judged by a panel of architect professionals and are presented in April each year.

Within the Awards program, there are 8 categories including Large New Home, Small New Home, Large Renovation, Small Renovation and the speciality categories of Best Interior Award (presented by Cosh Living), Best Energy Efficient Home Award (presented by Rylock Windows &amp; Doors) and Best Outdoor Integrated Living in addition there is also the People’s Choice Awards which allows readers and architecture enthusiasts to vote for their favourite project!

Alliera and Rebecca were drawn to their current project, HAAUS.4, not only for the incredible land that surrounds the property in Berry, but for the opportunity to push themselves creatively. Their objective was to capture the charming cottage ambience that Berry is renowned for, while maintaining the relaxed yet sophisticated HAAUS. experience. Aligning with a love for design and functionality, Godfrey Hirst are delighted to have worked with the talented HAAUS. team on this home.

To create a tranquil, warm, and inviting space, Alliera and Rebecca speak to their use of natural materials, minimalist design elements and a calming colour palette. They found the tactility of <a href="https://www.godfreyhirst.com/au/products/chatsworth">Chatsworth </a>wool carpet’s texture loop design to fit the cosy, natural and soft brief, providing a strong foundation for the overall interior design elements. Further adding to the sense of calm, Alliera and Rebecca loved the sound-insulating properties of wool, offering a quiet and soothing effect.

The HAAUS.4 colour palette complements the bright, airy atmosphere of their surrounding green scapes, creating a sense of spaciousness. Incorporating hues of pale clay and light ivory, <a href="https://www.godfreyhirst.com/au/products/chatsworth">Chatsworth </a>in colour <a href="https://www.godfreyhirst.com/au/products/chatsworth?colour=talman">310 Talman</a> provided a stunning cream tone to balance the subtle accents of colour. With the soft, organic shapes of the furniture merging with the use of linen, cotton and wool, Alliera and Rebecca have created a space that feels cohesively designed.&nbsp;

It has been inspiring to watch Alliera and Rebecca’s project come to fruition and to see our product set in this beautiful home.

Godfrey Hirst is privileged to draw on over 150 years manufacturing experience in Australia and New Zealand. The Godfrey Hirst name is truly synonymous with Geelong, dating back to 1865 when the Victorian Woollen and Cloth Manufacturing company was established as one of Victoria’s first textile mills.

Godfrey Hirst was an Englishman, the son of Charles Hirst, a spinner, Godfrey Hirst trained as a weaver in his family business before arriving in Victoria in search of a warmer climate in the hopes to improve his health. He initially worked as an insurance agent, but soon challenged the Victorian Woollen &amp; Cloth Manufacturing Co, which was struggling to thrive in the declining market and was looking to chase imports, however Hirst believed there was a living to be made from quality local production.

Hirst launched his own business venture in 1888, renting a shed in Fyans street and building his own loom using yarn supplied by his former employers and the Albion mill, manufacturing flannels. Despite the lull in the industry, Hirst did well and moved to a larger premises in 1889 and in partnership with Charles Shannon, a woolbroker, and Charles Smith, a fellmonger, bought the derelict Barwon woollen factory in July 1890. The old factory was renamed the Excelsior Number One mill with Hirst in personal charge of its raw materials and sales, it employed about one hundred people by 1895. In 1899 the adjoining Victorian factory was added and refurbished as the Excelsior Number Two mill. Advantaged by interstate free trade after Federation and government contracts during World War I, the firm’s pay-roll increased to more than 300 in 1917. The company then evolved into manufacturing blankets, rugs, tweeds and worsteds as well as flannels.  After the death of Charles Smith in 1908, the business was incorporated as Godfrey Hirst &amp; Co Pty Ltd in October 1909.

In 1911 and again after the Number One mill was destroyed by fire in March 1912 Hirst returned to England in search of the latest machinery. In Geelong he supported the Gordon Technical College as a centre of textile education and was its president in 1913-16. Hirst was a man of many hobbies, enjoying spending time at Belmont and Corio clubs and bowls. With a passion for music, Hirst was a self-taught musician, he was an organist at St Georgie’s Presbyterian Church from 1889 and a vice-president of the Geelong Musician Society. He also sponsored the Excelsior Mills choir and was active in the musical life of the Belmont Methodist Church. A man of strong principles and high expectations but reserved and lacking the common touch, he once stood unsuccessfully for the South Barwon Shire Council. He became a justice of the peace in 1908.

Hirst passed in 1917, leaving behind him a rich and powerful contribution to the revival of the woollen industry in Geelong in the early 1900’s. In 1922, Charles Shannon’s passing saw Mrs Hirst open a new dining hall and the following year in 1923, seven additional looms and other plants were purchased. The mills, continued to operate under the leadership of Willie Hirst as Godfrey Hirst &amp; Co Pty Ltd, carpet manufacturers until Willie sadly passed in 1925, leaving Lewis Hirst as Managing Director. Cedric Hirst, Godfrey Hirst’s grandson took over the reigns in 1951 following the passing of his father Lewis hirst and more than 15 years later in 1966 Godfrey Hirst Co was acquired with a clear focus on a carpet production versus others textiles..

In 2006, 40 years later, Feltex Carpets Limited was acquired by Godfrey Hirst &amp; Co. Pty Ltd.  A publicly listed company in New Zealand, it began operations in New Zealand in 1929 with the manufacture of felt slippers, and began producing carpets in the 1940s.  Manufacturing operations that today, form part of Feltex’s Australian operations began production in Australia in the 1920s under a portfolio of well-known brand names such as Feltex Reserve, Feltex Classic, Feltex Commercial, Feltex Woven, Invicta, Kensington, Redbook, Minster and Tile modular carpet.  The Feltex business in New Zealand also produced wool yarn, scoured wool for its own use and for other exporters.

In 2018, Godfrey Hirst was acquired by Mohawk Industries, the world’s largest flooring company. The sale allowed Godfrey Hirst to expand its product offering and capabilities to a global scale. It equally allowed the very best of Mohawk commercial product offerings to be introduced to the Australian market, as well as Mohawk’s European flooring business Unilin, with the IVC Commercial brand. In 2018 GH Commercial was born to house the now growing portfolio of local and global brands to it’s stable.

Faces Of Local Manufacturing

After their 2013 win on The Block, the designers have built their businesses, Alisa &amp; Lysandra Interiors and A.live Body. From 2018, they have showcased their incredible design projects with their series ‘The Design Duo’.

The duo have taken on their most ambitious project to date, a dream family home in Paradise Point in Queensland. This bespoke four-bedroom home features luxury, high-end products, and Godfrey Hirst are thrilled to have worked with Alisa &amp; Lysandra to help bring this to life.

In episode one, Alisa &amp; Lysandra revealed the elegant and spacious master bedroom, WIR and ensuite. Aligning with luxurious textures of stone, brass and velvet, the natural fibre of <a href="https://www.godfreyhirst.com/au/products/chatsworth">Chatsworth</a> wool carpet complements the tactile nature of this space. With vivid pops of green paired with subtle neutral and black hues, the light grey colour provides the ideal flooring foundation throughout the bedroom and WIR.

Throughout the contemporary office space, Alisa &amp; Lysandra featured <a href="https://www.godfreyhirst.com/au/products/chatsworth">Chatsworth</a> wool carpet, providing a soft and textural feel underfoot. With sliding doors opening into a lush courtyard, bespoke timber cabinetry, marble benchtops and wool carpet, this setting emphasises nature as a key theme.

In episode four, Alisa &amp; Lysandra presented the dreamy the second and third bedrooms. Sophisticated yet relaxed, both bedrooms feature warm, earthy tones, accentuated with the natural textural fibre of the grey wool carpet underneath – <a href="https://www.godfreyhirst.com/au/products/chatsworth">Chatsworth</a> in <a href="https://www.godfreyhirst.com/au/products/chatsworth?colour=devonshire">520 Devonshire</a>. 
Again, the Design Duo have used natural elements of wool, indoor plants rattan oak to capture the calm and tranquil ambience of nature. Made in Australia, the beauty of Chatsworth wool carpet stems from the inherent complexity of the fibre itself, evolved to protect sheep, no matter the conditions. The Melbourne International Comedy Festival aims to discover, develop and showcase great talent for the entertainment and inspiration of a broad-based audience. The Festival values irreverence, inventiveness and creativity, inclusiveness and accessibility, freedom of speech and respect for all. We are proud to be partnering with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2023, supplying a range of standard and custom carpet flooring solutions at selected venues throughout the Festival.

<h3>The Featured Product</h3>

Melbourne International Comedy Festival required a range of bespoke carpet designs to pair with each unique venue and vision that are utilised throughout the festival. <a href="https://www.ghcommercial.com/products?customisable%5b%5d=customisable&amp;orderby=dateDesc&amp;rollSize%5b%5d=1.96&amp;type%5b%5d=CPT">Designer Jet®</a> provided the ideal flooring solution and enabled the Melbourne International Comedy Festival team to work alongside GH Commercial’s design teams to create a range of unique and branded designs to meet the required needs of each venue.

Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2023 x Godfrey Hirst

As an Australian and New Zealand manufacturer, we actively work towards reducing our environmental footprint across our infrastructure and facilities. We strive to improve processes and seek to source and develop local solutions to this global issue under our sustainability vision, Believe in Better.

Large factory and warehouse facilities generally require a sizeable system for lighting. These systems can result in a significant energy drain so, with that in mind, we upgraded our lighting systems to energy-efficient LED lights.

Between late 2021 and early 2023, we have replaced approximately 75% of the lights at our Plant 5 and Melbourne Logistics sites and our South Geelong and Breakwater sites with higher-efficiency LED models. This was achieved through the LED Light Replacement/Upgrade under the Victorian Energy Upgrades rebate program.

The light fittings replaced included high-bay units in production and warehousing areas, as well as 4-foot battens, some oyster-style lights in bathrooms and small offices, and some panel-style fittings in office areas. Exit lights were also replaced at Plant 5 with an LED version.

The new fittings include programable features such as motion sensors, light level sensors and automatic timer-off functions to allow us to configure the operation of the light fittings to suit the environment and application – maximising energy savings.

Providing Energy Efficient Lighting

On the 17th of March 2023 Godfrey Hirst held our largest Take 3 for the Sea beach clean-up event to date! This now being our third beach clean-up event in as many years, as well as continuing to be an official supporter of Take 3 for the Sea, we are proud to get behind such an important organisation. 

In only one hour, our 31-person strong Godfrey Hirst team, along with Take 3 for the Sea representatives collected 1,657 litter items weighing 7kg. altogether. Working to remove this litter from our environment helps to protect our animals, ecosystems, and oceans.

On Friday afternoon, the team from Godfrey Hirst removed an incredible 1,657 pieces of rubbish from Eastern Beach in Geelong. Eastern Beach is a popular waterfront area with high traffic, especially on a beautiful sunny afternoon, like we had!

The team were in good spirits as they set out to clean up the beach, and showed great dedication to the task, collecting waste from areas that clearly hadn't been cleaned in a while. They also did a great job of accurately recording their findings, providing detailed data collection sheets to help identify waste sources.

To create the luxurious runway within the Royal Exhibition Building, an engineered timber product, <a href="https://www.godfreyhirst.com/au/products/corsica-oak">Corsica Oak</a> in the colour <a href="https://www.godfreyhirst.com/au/products/corsica-oak?colour=coastal-oak">510 Coastal Oak</a>, provided a centre stage for the festival’s premium runway events. The Corsica Oak runway is paired with a sleek black solution dyed nylon cut pile twist carpet, <a href="https://www.godfreyhirst.com/au/products/timeless">Timeless</a> in colour <a href="https://www.godfreyhirst.com/au/products/timeless?colour=black-magic">795 Black Magic</a>. Timeless is utilised in the surrounding areas to ensure that the runway is the focal point of the space.

It works by taking any striking pattern, drawing or image and using precision engineering to inject the dye into the carpet, offering a flexible, creative and performance driven carpet solution. PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival required a bespoke carpet runner to pair with their media wall that could encompass their vibrant brand colours. A custom design was required to create a vibrant design where guests could be photographed that could incorporate required branding elements. Designer Jet® provided the ideal flooring solution and enabled the team at PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival to work alongside GH Commercial’s design teams to meet the desired brief.

Reduced Water Consumption 
We Believe In Better® in everything we do, everyday. Join us on our sustainability journey to introduce new initiatives to reduce our environmental footprint, improve the energy and water consumption of our manufacturing processes and continue to improve our energy efficiency company wide.

Dye Washing 
With the introduction of a new dye washing line which has dramatically reduced our energy consumption and water consumption within this process which will save 500 Litres per minute of water during a production run. This new initiative is just one of the ways that we are becoming more sustainable for our planet and reducing our environmental footprint.

Latex Application 
Latex application during our manufacturing process utilises water to adhere a secondary backing to the carpet. We have recently introduced a new initiative that recycles the water utilised in our latex application process which is done weekly in large batches. This new initiative has resulted in significant water consumption savings with 600L less water being used every 14-tonne latex batch.

As an industry leader in flooring, one of our key sustainability pillars is <a href="https://www.ghcommercial.com/sustainability/resource-stewardship">Resource Stewardship</a>.  The planning of our new palletised warehouse at Truganina involved accommodating our ever-expanding Australian operations and an important commitment to the further reduction of emissions across our operations.

We’re doing better together, to recycle our metal waste. GH Commercial and Godfrey Hirst strive to recycle wherever possible to reduce the environmental impact of our manufacturing operations. We’re always looking for new ways to reduce what we send to landfill.

Sims Metal regularly collect metal scraps and old unused machinery from our manufacturing operations. With 36,900 kilograms of metal collected by Sims Metal from GH Commercial and Godfrey Hirst premises in 2022. All metal is then processed or broken down in order to be repurposed. All of the metal collected from our sites here in Geelong is reused and repurposed within Australia.

Sims Metal is the leading collector, processor, and supplier of recycled metal in Australia. Servicing all states and territories across 30 physical locations. With over 100 years of experience in the metal recycling industry Sims Metal and significant investment in future growth of operations to continue to promote and provide recycling support worldwide.

Ensuring that we recycle our metal waste is another step that we take to ensure that we are striving to leave the planet better for future generations.

Sims Metal Recycling

At Godfrey Hirst, efforts to advance our shared mission of a more sustainable future continue. Having already fitted 436 solar panels on our warehouses in Truganina and Laverton, we’ve now completed our largest ever installation.&nbsp;

Plant 5, our north Geelong carpet tufting facility, is now the proud owner of a 500kW solar system. Covering 12,000m2 of the facility’s roof, the 1,088 460W panels generate up to 1.97MWh of clean energy per day, offsetting over 60% of daytime electricity. &nbsp;

This will help to power the production of over 16,000 lineal metres of carpet each day and reduce electricity bills at the Plant by an average of 28%.

<h3>A more sustainable future</h3>

To deliver this transformation, we used Tier 1 JA Solar 460W monocrystalline solar panels on the north facing side of the Plant, together with SolarEdge three phase inverters and optimisers. Recognised amongst the best bankable solar technology globally, the optimisers increase system production by tracking the maximum power of each panel.&nbsp;

The smart meter technology from SolarEdge also provides load monitoring, so we can see how much solar power is being consumed on site and exported. Plus, real-time monitoring of individual panels, making it easy to find and diagnose any faults.

As a proud Australian and New Zealand manufacturer, it’s important to us that we source and develop local solutions where possible.

<h3>Innovating for a better tomorrow</h3>

By transforming the Plant 5 roof into an energy resource, we’re not only cutting operating costs locally, but carbon emissions globally.&nbsp;

It’s another Resource Stewardship initiative that supports our Climate Active Carbon Neutral Organisation certification to cut greenhouse gas emissions across the entire business. Now at Plant 5, any surplus solar not consumed by the plant will be exported to the grid, and we’ll offset approximately 515 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

Drawing on over 150 years of manufacturing, backed by a strong heritage, we proudly operate four carpet manufacturing facilities, three yarn processing facilities, 10 distribution centres, and 14 sales offices across Australia and New Zealand where we are dedicated to reducing our environmental footprint through careful and responsible resource management and the continued investment in new technology to improve our processes. 
 

As a part of this manufacturing process, we are always looking for ways that we can continuously improve our operations, including to be more energy efficient. Consistent with this philosophy, we have recently taken steps to improve our compressed air usage onsite because the generation of compressed air requires significant amounts of energy. Compressed air is used throughout our manufacturing processes to power a range equipment from pneumatic cylinders to actuated valves and pumps throughout the plant. In order to improve the use of compressed air within our operations and ultimately reduce our energy consumption, we have commenced a project to better monitor the use of compressed air, identify and reduce leakages in air systems.

Fan favourites on 2019's season of The Block, Andy and Deb are documenting their design and renovation journey with their DNA of Design video series.

Located near the iconic beaches of the Gold Coast, Andy and Deb wanted this house to feel like you are on holiday, all year round.

Drawing inspiration from the cruisy Queensland lifestyle, this home pays tribute to the beautiful hinterland surroundings. This is accomplished with an effortless flow between the living room, alfresco dining, and a Palm Springs-esque pool area, blurring the lines of indoor and outdoor living.

In a nutshell, this space embodies luxurious, relaxed living – with the functionality of a family home.

Andy and Deb’s earthy, soft and natural design style marries neutral cream and beige tones with effortless and warm texture throughout.

Building the foundation for this pairing of texture and tonal palettes, they chose <a href="https://www.godfreyhirst.com/au/products/tranquil-texture?colour=ocean-sand">Tranquil Texture</a>, a wool carpet, for the bedrooms and cosy spaces.

Who said rumpus rooms had to be boring?

To begin their process, Andy and Deb created mood boards with product samples to experience how each design element would interact together.

Aiming for a colour palette of caramel hues and honey blondes combined with the soft contrast of white feature stone and walls, they decided on timber hard flooring, <a href="https://www.godfreyhirst.com/au/products/chateau-oak?colour=summer-blonde">Chateau Oak</a>.

The Aitkin’s open living and dining, complete with engineered timber flooring.

The subtle flecks of golden detail in the white feature stone offered a strong connection to the deeper colours in the knots and grains of the timber flooring, adding a coastal character.

When asked for renovation advice, Andy and Deb site communication with trades and suppliers as a key strength.

Godfrey Hirst is proud to continue to support Geelong-born artist, Rone, in his recent exhibition <a href="https://rone.art/">TIME • RONE</a>.

Set in the long-abandoned third-floor wing of Flinders Street Station, Time is a nostalgic love letter to mid-century Melbourne and a tribute to one of the city’s great icons.

This exhibit is Rone’s most ambitious project to date, for what is destined to be a multisensory installation, opening on 28th October (through to early 2023), featuring a number of our carpet and hard flooring products.

Developing the exhibition for the past three years, Time celebrates the grand scale and character of the site, as well as the minute detail of a period of Melbourne’s history long lost to progress.

Inspired by an era when European migrants powered the city’s booming manufacturing industries, this exhibition captures beauty in a forgotten, mid-century, working-class life.

To convey this, Rone explored various carpet designs and hard flooring that paid homage to the 1950-60’s era. <h3>Professional installation is a must</h3>

It is important that all carpet is professionally installed in accordance with Australian Standard 2455.1 “Textile Floor Coverings – Installation Practice – General” and the Godfrey Hirst / Hycraft Carpet Installation guidelines.

If you don't have carpet installed correctly it can void your guarantee.

 

<h3>What else should I consider?</h3>

 

<ul><li>
	Yes, you have enough carpet for your rooms and hallways, but do you need a bit more? We recommend that you keep the future in mind and purchase some extra carpet to update area such as stairs and any heavily trafficked or damaged areas in the years to come. You can also keep left over carpet to bind and make into mats.
	</li>
	<li>
	Don't forget underlay. Carpet should be installed on new underlay that is compatible with the quality and use of your new carpet.
	</li>
</ul> 

<h3>Preparing your home</h3>

 

Don't forget to get yourself ready when it's time for the carpet to arrive. 

<ul><li>Make sure you have made arrangements for the take up and disposal of your old carpet.</li>
	<li>You'll also need to shift your furniture out of the way to allow the carpet to be installed.</li>
	<li>Ensure that you can provide the easiest access for your carpet delivery.</li>
	<li>If the outside area is muddy, it's a great idea to provide an area for cleaning shoes.</li>
	<li>If you are laying carpet in a new house check that it is ready to go i.e. the power is on, the floor is clean, painted surfaces are dry, tiling is complete etc.</li>
</ul> 

<h3>Putting the carpet in</h3>

 

The big day is here. The carpet has arrived, and it is ready to transform your home. How do you make sure it is installed correctly? 

1. First things first. Check the underlay, trims, colour and style are what you have purchased. No point getting it all installed correctly if it is the wrong carpet! 

2. Now for the skills and artistry of the carpet layer. They should do the following: 

<ul><li>All carpets should be power stretched, otherwise bubbling and wrinkling will occur.</li>
	<li>Seam adhesive must be used for all seams.</li>
	<li>Carpet pile should run in the same direction throughout the house, sweeping towards the main entrance.</li>
	<li>Generally seams should run in the same direction as most foot traffic.</li>
	<li>On stairways the pile should sweep down.</li>
	<li>Extra, hidden carpet should be folded back at the top and bottom of stairs so that as the edges of the tread are worn, the carpet can be moved to hide the wear.</li>
</ul>3. The carpet layer has finished and, at first glance, it looks great. You need to check it over though, just to be sure. Before the carpet layer leaves your property inspect the laid carpet for faults and check that no damage has been caused during installation.

 

<h3>After laying </h3>

 

After your carpet is laid, vacuum lightly and frequently in the first week to remove surface lint dust and fluff.

Carpet Stain Removal

Basic eco+ Carpet Cleaning Steps: 1. Immediately remove as much of the spill as possible 
For solids use a blunt knife or spoon. Blot up liquids by applying pressure with white paper towels or tissues to remove as much liquid as practical. Use a wet/dry vacuum for large spills.

2. Use cold water 
Cold water is all that’s needed to remove most stains from Godfrey Hirst eco+® carpets. Always work from the outside of the stain or spillage towards the middle to avoid further spreading the stain. Apply clean cold water to the affected area with a sponge or spray while avoiding over wetting the carpet and blot up with a sponge or use a wet/dry vacuum to remove the water. Repeat until no discolouration is evident in the carpet or removed water. Once this has been achieved repeat the cleaning 4 or 5 times to remove any remnant stain hidden in the pile.

3. Press dry 
Once the stain has been removed with cold water, press dry with a clean white cloth or white paper towel.

4. Do not walk on the carpet until dry 
After the spill or stain has been treated, place several layers of white paper towel over the area and place a flat weight on them until dry. Do not walk on the carpet until dry.

5. Repeat if required 
Sometimes stains will reappear due to “wicking” as stains hidden in the pile surface as the carpet dries. If so, allow the carpet to dry fully and repeat the above treatment until no stain is evident (this process may need to be repeated over a number of days).

6. Need more help?  
If stains fail to respond to treatment, contact a professional steam cleaner. It is important professional steam cleaners continually treat any areas affected by stains until there is no sign of discolouration in the carpet or removed water, following which the cleaning cycle should be repeated a number of times to minimise the risk of wicking.
