Nicole Chapman is an award-winning interior designer and decorator. She heads up Melbourne design studio, Empire Interiors, and we recently caught up with her for a chat and to check out her amazing 30-day renovation project: a home for herself and her son.
She chose our gorgeous timber flooring Villa in colour Riverstone.
Tell us about this project...
The vision for this house was really a home for myself and my five-year-old son, Max, to live in. As soon as I walked up to the driveway and saw the beautiful gardens - I knew before I opened the door that this was the place.
It had high ceilings and beautiful cornicing and lots of beautiful detail that I knew I could transform.
In 30 days you have achieved so much. Where do you start?
I always start with the floors in a design because I feel that they set the tone colour-wise for everything to then come on top of that.
Why did you choose Villa timber flooring?
As soon as I saw this colour, Riverstone, I think most of the other colour choices stemmed from that. It's got a really beautiful warm elegance to it and that slight grey wash which everything else in the home has. It's the one defining colour and texture that brings an essence of warmth in an otherwise all grey and white colour palette.
How did the installation go?
Installation was really easy and they did it in a day. They were in and out - there was no mess and I rocked up the next day and it was done and dusted.
It looks like authentic old French oak flooring which I love.
What's your favourite space?
I love the kitchen. I love to cook and Max and I always make home-made pizzas. When people come over that's always where we end up hanging out.
You once said that "beauty is in simplicity" - does that translate well to a family home?
I think simplicity is the key to all aspects of life. I'm not really attached to "things". Everything in my home means something to me and I have reduced a lot of it down.
What tips would you give someone else when styling their own home?
Decide what the home is to you. For us our home is a kitchen, it's a yoga studio, it's movie night. You really have to say what means the most to you and your lifestyle and pick your pieces around that.
That's what Interior Design is - it's a collection of all beautiful things that you love into one overall artwork that ends up being your home.
