Made in Geelong – Godfrey Hirst Exhibition
We are proud to announce that MADE IN GEELONG: Godfrey Hirst is now open at the National Wool Museum, marking a major milestone in our company’s history. This special exhibition celebrates 160 years of manufacturing in Geelong, honouring both our founder Godfrey Hirst and the generations of makers, engineers, designers and creatives who have shaped our story since 1865.
Developed in partnership with the National Wool Museum and supported by the City of Greater Geelong, the exhibition brings together rare objects, photographs, tools, documents and curiosities drawn from the City’s collection, the Hirst family, and our own archives. Together, these pieces capture our evolution from a small textile operation into one of Australia’s leading flooring manufacturers.
Our history began with the Victorian Woollen and Cloth Manufacturing Company, established in 1865. When a young weaver named Godfrey Hirst arrived from Yorkshire in 1883, he brought with him a craftsperson’s eye and an entrepreneur’s ambition. His determination saw him rise from artisan to industry leader, eventually establishing his own company and acquiring mills across the region. The legacy of his vision is still visible in the work we do today.
A Celebration of Geelong’s Design Identity
As a UNESCO City of Design, Geelong continues to champion creativity, sustainability and innovation across industries. We are honoured that Made in Geelong: Godfrey Hirst has been recognised as part of this ongoing cultural story.
Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM emphasised this connection, saying: “Geelong’s legacy of textile innovation is woven into the city’s identity, and Godfrey Hirst stands as a cornerstone of that story… This exhibition reflects the creative ingenuity and community values that continue to shape our region.”
National Wool Museum Director Padraic Fisher added: “Through objects, photographs and personal accounts… this exhibition highlights the power of design and the profound impact one individual can have on a community.”
Honouring Our People, Past and Present
For us, this anniversary is far more than a reflection on the past - it is a celebration of the people who have powered Godfrey Hirst for 160 years. As Tania Pauling, President Mohawk Flooring Oceania, shared: “This milestone belongs to our people, our partners, and our city. From the mills to the design studio, their skill and pride have carried Godfrey Hirst for 160 years - and they’re the reason we’re so confident about the future we’re building in Geelong.”
Interactive Experience
Alongside the main exhibition, visitors can enjoy Printed/Woven/Tufted - an interactive, hands-on experience that invites both children and adults to try their hand at carpet design, inspired by the processes that have defined our craft.
