At Godfrey Hirst, our commitment to sustainability and continuous improvement has led us to explore innovative solutions in our production processes. With 160 years local manufacturing expertise, we’ve been committed to delivering flooring that Australians trust underfoot – but just as importantly, we’re committed to doing our part for the environment. In line with our dedication to reducing environmental impact, we have initiated a project to trial recycled PVC cores in our carpet manufacturing.Previously, our carpet rolls utilised disposable cardboard cores and imported polypropylene cores from the United States. Seeking a more sustainable and locally sourced alternative, we partnered with Think Manufacturing, a Portarlington-based company renowned for its expertise in recycled PVC products. Together, we are trialling cores made from 98% recycled PVC, aligning with our goals of reducing waste and supporting local manufacturing.To make this all possible, Think Manufacturing arranged for specialised tooling to be manufactured in China on our behalf. This custom tooling is designed to support the extrusion process, allowing recycled PVC plastic to be formed into strong, high-quality carpet cores that meet the demands of our production environment.The project commenced 12 months ago and is currently being trialled in Plant 5. We’re working closely with our teams on the ground to ensure the new cores meet the high standards of durability and performance. This initiative reflects our ongoing efforts to integrate sustainable practices into our operations, ensuring that our products not only meet the highest standards of quality and comfort but also have a low environmental footprint.

Our Social Impact: Local Legacy, Real Impact

On 4 April 2025, Godfrey Hirst proudly hosted its annual Take 3 for the Sea clean-up event, this year taking place at Eastern Beach in Geelong. As a long-term supporter of this impactful organisation, we are honoured to mark our fifth consecutive year of partnership with Take 3 for the Sea - an initiative dedicated to removing litter from the environment and safeguarding marine life, waterways, and ecosystems.This event has become more than just an environmental initiative; it’s also an opportunity for us to connect locally and actively contribute to the wellbeing of our community. Eastern Beach, though seemingly pristine, revealed a significant amount of hidden litter upon closer inspection. This year, our team of 30 collected an incredible 17.7 kgs of rubbish, with a total of 2,278 pieces picked up in just one hour!During the event, our team were informed of the six key factors behind littering - cleanliness, infrastructure, education/awareness, enforcement, involvement and source reduction. The company was recognised for its commitment to both environmental responsibility and operational excellence, securing the Sustainability Excellence Award and the Manufacturing Excellence Award.A Double Victory for Godfrey HirstThe evening's first major win came with the Sustainability Excellence Award, proudly sponsored by Viva Energy. The award was presented by Bill Patterson, General Manager Refining at Viva Energy, to Lachlan McMurtrie, the newly appointed Chief Sustainability Officer of Mohawk Flooring Oceania representing Godfrey Hirst. This award acknowledges GH’s industry-leading efforts to reduce emissions and transition towards a more sustainable future.One of the most impressive achievements highlighted was the company’s substantial progress in reducing its carbon footprint. As of the end of 2024, GH had successfully cut its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 34% compared to 2020 levels. This milestone places the company well on track to achieve its ambitious target of a 42% reduction in emissions by 2030.To achieve these emissions reductions, the company has invested significantly in renewable energy solutions. All of its Australian manufacturing sites - and approximately half of its New Zealand operations - are now equipped with large-scale rooftop solar installations. Curated by Mob in Fashion, the Back in Blak Runway drew inspiration from Australian pop culture rebellion, redefining it through the eyes of First Nations designers and artisans.The Mob In Fashion runway carpet was designed by <a href="https://iamenoki.com/">ENOKi</a> (they/them), a proud Dja Dja Wurrung and Yorta Yorta Multi-Media artist based on Wurundjeri Country (Melbourne). Their design presented an abstract depiction of space, featuring patterns in the background representing faraway galaxies and organic shapes in the foreground symbolising stars. The artwork captured the energy emitted by stars and how it travelled through space, connecting to us and country, much like how the sun sustains life. It reminds her of the responsibility to create a world where both her daughters and sons see equality as the norm, not the exception. It’s about ensuring that workplaces evolve to support women’s ambitions without forcing them to choose between career and family. TIME•RONE is a highly anticipated art installation that is set to open its doors once again, this time at the Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA). This immersive art experience transports visitors to a moment of suspended time, where they can truly indulge in the memories of mid-century Australia.&nbsp;We were delighted for the custom carpets produced for the original TIME•RONE Flinders St Melbourne installation to be reused in the AGWA installation that creates a sense of continuity between the two exhibitions. Rone explored various carpet designs that paid homage to the 1950-60’s era. Using our <a href="https://www.ghcommercial.com/designer-jet" target="”_blank”">Designer Jet®</a> technology through <a href="https://www.ghcommercial.com" target="”_blank”">GH Commerical</a>, Rone was able to achieve the pattern, colour and texture desired to represent the spirit of Melbourne’s industrial past. Godfrey Hirst also supplied the <a href="https://www.godfreyhirst.com/au/product-types/laminate-flooring">laminate</a> floor, <a href="https://www.godfreyhirst.com/au/products/amor-classic">Amor Classic</a>&nbsp;in colour 580 Ancient Oak.The installation will be open to visitors from June 28th to 30th September, with 12 unique spaces to explore, including one new space exclusive to the AGWA installation, visitors can expect to be fully immersed in the experience. Godfrey Hirst have been using bikes at our Plant 5 factory in North Geelong for the past 13 years. The factory is spread across a massive 20,000 square metre area, and the bikes have proved to be handy for the mechanics, supervisors, and leading hands working in the factory.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The bikes are used to get to callouts quickly, saving time and improving productivity, with the mechanics carrying their tools in the basket on the back of the bike.&nbsp; Godfrey Hirst's Believe in Better® framework, including the Better for Performance and Better for People pillars, is being implemented in these operations, aiming to create a better, more innovative, and enjoyable workplace.&nbsp;

On the 15th of March 2024, Godfrey Hirst held our largest Take 3 for the Sea clean-up event to date, but this time in our Head Office’s backyard alongside the Barwon River with our biggest team yet! We are proud to be an official supporter of the Take 3 for the Sea organisation for the fourth year in a row. 
In just an hour, our team of 40 people, along with Take 3 for the Sea representatives, collected 1,488 litter items weighing an astounding 34.5kg altogether! Take 3 for the Sea is an important organisation that works to remove litter from our environment which helps to protect our animals, ecosystems, and waterways.

The Godfrey Hirst team joined forces with Take 3 for the Sea along the Barwon River in South Geelong for a riverside clean-up event. A total of 34.5kg was collected by the Godfrey Hirst team, totalling 1488 items in one hour, the litter filled 5 garbage bags!

<h3>Wahini the Green Sea Turtle</h3>

Poor Wahini the green sea turtle was found entangled in a crab pot. She was close to drowning from the weight of the crab pot but was thankfully rescued on time. After receiving antibiotics and plenty of rest, Wahini has recovered and regained her strength. She has been released back into the wild. What a fighter!

<h3>Maisy the Koala Joey</h3>

Maisy the koala joey came to the Wildlife Hospital after losing her mum to disease. She is now receiving lots of love and care from her dedicated wildlife carer. Once Maisy has grown and is old enough, she’ll begin life in her natural habitat.

<h3>Tinkerbell the Whiptail Wallaby</h3>

Tinkerbell the Whiptail was found experiencing diarrhoea and concerns of aspiration pneumonia when presented to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. Thankfully, Tinkerbell responded well to antibiotics and fluids and is now with a loving wildlife carer while she gains strength before returning home to the wild.

Our friends at <a href="https://www.feltex.com/au">Feltex</a> have worked with Bree Leech's to create maximalist-inspired lounge space for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival has added an extra layer of excitement to the country's biggest comedy festival. Located at Trades Hall in the heart of Melbourne, this ever-so-creative retreat serves as a perfect prelude to the laughter and joy that the festival promises.

As guests mingle and interact within the lounge, they find themselves surrounded by Leech's signature style—bold colours, eclectic furnishings, and an unapologetic sense of playfulness expressed through our designer carpet brand, Feltex. The space becomes a reflection of the festival itself—a celebration of individuality, creativity, and the joy of laughter.&nbsp;

For those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the festival, the lounge offers a welcome retreat. Plush seating and cozy nooks provide the perfect spot to unwind with a drink in hand, while the vibrant decor serves as a feast for the eyes.&nbsp;

In the vibrant tapestry of the Feltex lounge space, there's a seamless integration of artistry and collaboration, embodied through the work of the talented artist, Renee Melia. Renowned for her captivating prints and bold aesthetic, Melia's contribution adds an extra layer of depth and intrigue to Bree’s eclectic design.&nbsp;

Godfrey Hirst and GH Commercial are proud supporters of PNG Foundation, an organisation that provides Kamea people in remote Papua New Guinea access to health, education, and infrastructure.

The PNG Foundation aims to provide primary healthcare access for all Kameas, improve nutrition status, improve hospital buildings and implement an effective vaccination program to prevent communicable diseases. They believe that education is the foundation for children to reach their full potential. Their aim is to improve school infrastructure and provide access to supplies, electricity and communication.

Every year, PNG Foundation welcomes volunteer health and other professionals from Australia to visit Kanabea. These skilled individuals, including doctors, nurses and allied health workers, provide valuable services to the clinic and outposts. Additionally, other professionals such as plumbers, painters, and carpenters have also contributed by renovating existing buildings. School supplies were donated to the Kanabea primary school and cement for 2 additional classrooms.

What is a flat lay?

The results put GH Commercial in the top 97th percentile of more than 100,000+ rated companies in the EcoVadis global network.

The Ecovadis methodology is built on international sustainability standards, including the Global Reporting Initiative, the United Nations Global Compact, and the ISO 26000, covering 200+ spend categories and 175+ countries.

In 2022 we became a proud member of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) a co-regulatory not-for-profit organisation leading the development of a circular economy for packaging in Australia. As part of this membership, we are working to assess all of our packaging and how we can improve our processes surrounding this aspect of our operations.

Plastic Packaging Initiatives

Earlier in May, we were fortunate enough to again host 2 groups of students from the Geelong Future Leaders of Industry (GFLOI) and Girls Leading Advanced Manufacturing (GLAM) who are interested in exploring the manufacturing industry, and the diversity of careers that it can offer. We have hosted these groups previously in 2021, and the feedback was that it was a great day to see behind the scenes one of the world’s largest flooring company and Australian manufacturers.

Deakin University’s award for their highest honours grade in the Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours), Bachelor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (Honours), Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours), Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering (Honours), or Bachelor of Environmental Engineering (Honours) degree is named the ‘Godfrey Hirst Australia Award’.

At the beginning of June this year, Samuel Franks was rewarded with this award recognising his studies of engineering throughout 2022. Our continuance of our support to Deakin University and their engineering students has not waivered from when we first begun over 15 years ago. In 2020, this prize was awarded to Kim Littras, who is now an electrical engineer with Godfrey Hirst and is an integral part of our factory sector.&nbsp;

Godfrey Hirst Australia has achieved Climate Active Carbon Neutral organisation status and are proud to be the first Australian carpet manufacturer to do so. Furthermore, Godfrey Hirst New Zealand is also now a carbon neutral organisation1.

The Australian government program Climate Active recognises businesses that take voluntary climate action to measure, reduce and offset carbon emissions. Godfrey Hirst Australia’s Climate Active membership and certified carbon neutral organisation status demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and industry leadership to drive genuine change.

One carbon offsetting project we have supported is the Yunnan Yuanjiang Lutong Hydropower Station is located in Yunnan Province, China2. &nbsp;A factor in our decision to support this project was the fact that several of our hard flooring suppliers are located in China. The project is a diversion-type run-of-river hydropower station with an installed capacity of 10MW generating approximately 52,920MWh of electricity annually. The project reduces the emission of greenhouse gases by replacing equivalent electricity from the China Southern Power Grid, which is dominated by fossil fuel-fired power plants.

Yunnan Yuanjiang Lutong Hydropower Station Offsetting Project

One carbon offsetting project we have supported is the Hubei Duhe Pankou Hydropower Plant in China, located on the Du River, in Zhushan Country, northwest of Hubei Province, China2. &nbsp;A factor in our decision to support this project was the fact that several of our hard flooring suppliers are located in China. Utilising water resources of the Du River and delivering an annual average of 1,105,800 MWh of electricity to the Central China Power Grid, this project upholds the UN Sustainability Development Goal of taking urgent climate action. Local electricity demand was previously supplied by the Hubei Grid, comprised predominantly of non-renewable coal power plants. This hydropower plant has a total installed capacity of 500MW and reduces the emission of greenhouse gases by replacing traditional thermal power with renewable hydropower.

Duhe Pankou Hydropower Plant Offsetting Project

One carbon offsetting project that we have supported is the ‘Carbon Conscious Carbon Capture Project 1’ which is a reforestation project across 14 properties totalling 5,700ha in the Central and Northern Agricultural Regions of Western Australia. We chose this project as a reflection of our Australian Made operations, with all of our soft floor coverings made in Australia and New Zealand. From 2009 to 2010 over 6 million native species Mallee trees planted on land previously cleared for dryland cropping and grazing. Registration as a Carbon Farming Initiative Project included commitment to maintaining the forest for a minimum of 100 years. This region in Western Australia was recognised as significantly over-cleared, and the reforestation is: providing protective habitat for native flora and fauna; reducing wind and water erosion; in some cases reducing soil salinity and some cases providing a useful environment for sheep and honey bees.

The Grand Designs Australia Magazine House of the Year Awards (HOTY) proudly puts the spotlight on residential architecture, showcasing some of the best projects created by Australian Architects. The HOTY Awards are designed to celebrate the brilliant outcomes created by Architects for their clients, resulting in an incredibly high standard of project submissions.

The Grand Designs Australia Magazine HOTY Awards is now open for nominations! The team at Grand Designs are calling on Australian architects to enter their best residential projects to win this prestigious award and huge exposure through Grand Designs Australia Magazine and associated social media channels. The awards are judged by a panel of architect professionals and are presented in April each year.

Within the Awards program, there are 8 categories including Large New Home, Small New Home, Large Renovation, Small Renovation and the speciality categories of Best Interior Award (presented by Cosh Living), Best Energy Efficient Home Award (presented by Rylock Windows &amp; Doors) and Best Outdoor Integrated Living in addition there is also the People’s Choice Awards which allows readers and architecture enthusiasts to vote for their favourite project!

House Of The Year Awards 2024 - Grand Designs Australia Magazine

Godfrey Hirst is privileged to draw on 160 years of manufacturing experience in Australia and New Zealand. The Godfrey Hirst name is truly synonymous with Geelong, dating back to 1865, when the Victorian Woollen and Cloth Manufacturing Company was established as one of Victoria’s first textile mills.Godfrey Hirst was an Englishman, the son of Charles Hirst, a spinner. Trained as a weaver in his family business, Godfrey arrived in Victoria in search of a warmer climate, hoping it would improve his health. He initially worked as an insurance agent but soon took an interest in the struggling Victorian Woollen &amp; Cloth Manufacturing Co. At the time, the company was faltering in a declining market and was considering chasing cheaper imports. Hirst, however, believed there was a future in quality local production.<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/gh/image/upload/v1/articles/5be230db-adfd-4493-bb74-e8491cd7215e/photography/about_us-news-img_001.jpg" width="500">In 1888, Hirst launched his own business, renting a shed in Fyans Street and building his own loom. Using yarn supplied by his former employers and the Albion Mill, he began manufacturing flannels. Despite a lull in the industry, Hirst thrived, moving to larger premises in 1889. In partnership with Charles Shannon, a wool broker, and Charles Smith, a fellmonger, he purchased the derelict Barwon Woollen Factory in July 1890. The factory was renamed the Excelsior Number One Mill, with Hirst personally overseeing raw materials and sales. By 1895, it employed around one hundred people.<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/gh/image/upload/v1/articles/5be230db-adfd-4493-bb74-e8491cd7215e/photography/about_us-news-img_002.jpg" width="500">In 1899, the adjoining Victorian factory was acquired and refurbished as the Excelsior Number Two Mill. Boosted by interstate free trade following Federation and government contracts during World War I, the company’s payroll grew to more than 300 employees by 1917. The product range also expanded to include blankets, rugs, tweeds, worsteds and flannels.Following the death of Charles Smith in 1908, the business was incorporated as Godfrey Hirst &amp; Co. Pty Ltd in October 1909. After a fire destroyed the Number One Mill in March 1912, Hirst returned to England in search of the latest machinery - something he had also done in 1911.<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/gh/image/upload/v1/articles/5be230db-adfd-4493-bb74-e8491cd7215e/photography/about_us-news-img_003.jpg" width="500">Back in Geelong, Hirst supported the Gordon Technical College as a centre for textile education, serving as its president from 1913 to 1916. A man of many hobbies, Hirst enjoyed time at the Belmont and Corio clubs and was a keen lawn bowler. A self-taught musician, he was the organist at St George’s Presbyterian Church from 1889 and a vice-president of the Geelong Musician Society. He also sponsored the Excelsior Mills choir and contributed actively to the musical life of the Belmont Methodist Church.Known for his strong principles and high expectations, Hirst once ran unsuccessfully for the South Barwon Shire Council and became a Justice of the Peace in 1908. Hirst passed away in 1917, leaving behind a lasting contribution to the revival of Geelong’s woollen industry in the early 1900s.<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/gh/image/upload/v1683855085/articles/5be230db-adfd-4493-bb74-e8491cd7215e/photography/about_us-news-img_004.jpg" width="500">In 1922, following the death of Charles Shannon, Mrs Hirst opened a new dining hall. The following year, seven additional looms and new machinery were purchased. The mills continued to operate under the leadership of Willie Hirst until his death in 1925, after which Lewis Hirst became Managing Director.In 1951, Godfrey Hirst’s grandson, Cedric Hirst, took the reins following the passing of his father Lewis. More than 15 years later, in 1966, the company narrowed its focus to carpet production. In 2006, Godfrey Hirst &amp; Co. Pty Ltd acquired Feltex Carpets Limited.A publicly listed company in New Zealand, Feltex began operations in 1921 with the manufacture of felt slippers and began producing carpets in the 1940s. Its Australian manufacturing operations date back to the 1920s, producing under well-known brand names such as Feltex Reserve, Feltex Classic, Feltex Commercial, Feltex Woven, Invicta, Kensington, Redbook, Minster and Tile modular carpet. In New Zealand, Feltex also produced wool yarn and scoured wool for its own use and for export.<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/gh/image/upload/v1/articles/5be230db-adfd-4493-bb74-e8491cd7215e/photography/about_us-news-img_005.jpg" width="500">In 2018, Godfrey Hirst was acquired by Mohawk Industries, the world’s largest flooring company. This move allowed Godfrey Hirst to expand its product offering and capabilities globally, while introducing Mohawk’s top commercial products to the Australian market. That same year, GH Commercial was established to house the expanding portfolio of local and global brands under one umbrella.<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/gh/image/upload/v1/articles/5be230db-adfd-4493-bb74-e8491cd7215e/photography/about_us-news-img_006.jpg" width="500">In 2025, the residential Godfrey Hirst brand and the commercial GH Commercial brand continued to grow from strength to strength. With a sharp focus on innovation, a strong presence in the market and a commitment to listening to customers, the business remains a powerhouse in the carpet and flooring industry.
