Over the last two decade, the floor covering industry is being inundated by more new technology and styling trends than ever. Products, construction, styling and installation technologies are changing so fast that it is difficult to keep up with the changes. Of all building materials, floor coverings of all kinds are changing most, and attitudes about floor coverings are changing, as well. 

After many years of extensive research and development, homeowners now have more choice when it comes to choosing a hard floor for their home. In fact, due to these technological advances in hard flooring, you can barely tell the difference between solid timber floors and engineered timber flooring .

Twenty years ago, if you wanted to install hard flooring in your home, you could choose between solid wood or sheet vinyl. Nowadays, engineered timber give homeowners more options, greater performance, and more flexibility within their budget. 

Engineered timber flooring is a layered product  made of 100% wood that looks and feels like solid flooring. The difference? It can be easier to install and less prone to seasonal movement, cracking, and warping than its solid counterparts. 

When you buy a product from the Godfrey Hirst Timber collection, you’re buying an engineered timber floor straight out of the box. The product has beautiful knots and grains in it, and it has a lovely variation of colours in each plank, just like you’d get with solid timber. It is a completely finished product down to the many layers of polyurethane, and it can be installed in a day compared with solid timber which can take months. 
  
Some people are surprised to learn that engineered timber really is timber. The top layer is real European oak which has been sustainably forested and harvested. Every plank is covered in Wearguard®, a hardy seven-coat polyurethane system that protects it from everyday wear and tear. Choosing engineered timber flooring over solid timber isn’t a compromise; in fact, in many ways it’s a better option.

Walking On Solid Ground

Laminate flooring combines the authentic look of timber with many practical advantages and a great price. Manufacturers have made such progress with digital printing and in-register embossing, which had become much harder to tell the difference between timber and laminate flooring.

The technology around photographic resolution and application of design has improved to the point where it is difficult to tell the difference between timber and laminate flooring. The embossing (stamping) process provides real texture on the surface and follows the grain and knot structure, adding ultimate realism to laminate floors. 

The biggest benefit of laminate is its performance. Its protective top layer makes it very robust which helps with fading, wear and tear, and scratching. Laminate is very difficult to dent or damage. If you drop a pan on it, if you have a dog with claws, if it’s in a high-traffic area, or if the space gets a lot of sun, laminate performs much better than timber. It has been designed to handle a lot so if you have an active lifestyle, laminate could be a better option than timber.

Laminate can now be installed in wet areas too. Advancement in technology has evolved with ranges that also contain waterproof surface treatments that allow for use in your kitchen, bathroom and laundry. The advantage of this approach is a truly a stress-free flooring alternative! It also provides a more consistent look throughout the entire house, which often results in a more spacious looking home. On the other hand, Timber flooring is particularly susceptible to the effects of water, and when spill happens, liquid must be wipe or mop as quickly as possible.

It is important that all carpet is professionally installed in accordance with the Australian Standards Association Carpet Installation Recommendations AS2455-1995 and the Godfrey Hirst Carpet Installation guidelines.

If you don't have carpet installed correctly it can void your guarantee.

 

<h3>What else should I consider?</h3>

<ul><li>
	Yes, you have enough carpet for your rooms and hallways, but do you need a bit more? We recommend that you keep the future in mind and purchase some extra carpet to update area such as stairs and any heavily trafficked or damaged areas in the years to come. You can also keep left over carpet to bind and make into mats.
	</li>
	<li>
	Don't forget underlay. Carpet should be installed on new underlay that is compatible with the quality and use of your new carpet.
	</li>
</ul><h3>Preparing your home </h3>

Don't forget to get yourself ready when it's time for the carpet to arrive. 

<ul><li>Make sure you have made arrangements for the take up and disposal of your old carpet.</li>
	<li>You'll also need to shift your furniture out of the way to allow the carpet to be installed.</li>
	<li>Ensure that you can provide the easiest access for your carpet delivery.</li>
	<li>If the outside area is muddy, it's a great idea to provide an area for cleaning shoes.</li>
	<li>If you are laying carpet in a new house check that it is ready to go i.e. the power is on, the floor is clean, painted surfaces are dry, tiling is complete etc.</li>
</ul><h3>Putting the carpet in</h3>

The big day is here. The carpet has arrived, and it is ready to transform your home. How do you make sure it is installed correctly? 

1. First things first. Check the underlay, trims, colour and style are what you have purchased. No point getting it all installed correctly if it is the wrong carpet! 

2. Now for the skills and artistry of the carpet layer. They should do the following: 

<ul><li>All carpets should be power stretched, otherwise bubbling and wrinkling will occur.</li>
	<li>Seam adhesive must be used for all seams.</li>
	<li>Carpet pile should run in the same direction throughout the house, sweeping towards the main entrance.</li>
	<li>Generally seams should run in the same direction as most foot traffic.</li>
	<li>On stairways the pile should sweep down.</li>
	<li>Extra, hidden carpet should be folded back at the top and bottom of stairs so that as the edges of the tread are worn, the carpet can be moved to hide the wear.</li>
</ul>3. The carpet layer has finished and, at first glance, it looks great. You need to check it over though, just to be sure. Before the carpet layer leaves your property inspect the laid carpet for faults and check that no damage has been caused during installation.

<h3>After laying </h3>

After your carpet is laid, vacuum lightly and frequently in the first week to remove surface lint dust and fluff.

<ul><li>Always blot, never rub or scrub</li>
	<li>Immediately scoop or blot up as much of the spill as possible, working from the outer edge towards the center to avoid spreading</li>
	<li>For most common household stains, treat with warm (not hot ) water</li>
	<li>For wool/wool blends, add one teaspoon of laundry detergent approved for wool and one teaspoon of white vinegar to each litre of warm water. Otherwise as the Stain Removal Guide</li>
	<li>Pre-test a small inconspicuous area of the carpet to ensure against damage and possible colour change</li>
	<li>Press dry the carpet with clean white cloth or paper towel in between treatments</li>
	<li>Once treated, apply water with a cloth until the carpet no longer feels sticky or soapy, then blot up with a clean white cloth or paper towel</li>
	<li>Place several layers of paper towel or cloth over the cleaned area and place a flat weight on them to absorb remaining moisture</li>
	<li>If unsuccessful, call a professional carpet cleaner immediately</li>
