Our Wool Story

Exquisite interiors begin with perfect flooring. For unrivalled comfort, you can't go past the look and feel of a Godfrey Hirst wool carpet. Proudly designed and made in Auckland, with wool sourced from New Zealand farms, our carpet is where the best of Aotearoa comes together to make a truly beautiful and luxurious product.

Our stunning and versatile ranges of cut pile or loop pile wool carpets are available in an array of sublime, earthy tones creating the ideal foundation for your interior space. We love the cosy softness of wool carpets, but the benefits of this 100% natural fibre go far beyond comfort. Natural wool properties make wool carpet ideal for every climate, insulating for warmth during winter chills, cooling for relief through sultry summers and keeping room temperatures just right during cool autumn nights and sunny spring days.

We really know wool. Every year we use over 6 million kilos of scoured wool to make our beautiful wool carpet, making us the largest wool carpet manufacturer in the world.

The incredible resource of wool, a pure, biodegradable and renewable material is at the heart of our Farm to Floor story. Natural stain resistance, easy to maintain and the flame retardancy of wool fibres make it a practical floor covering that is sure to enhance the look and feel of any space.

Meet Our Growers

Godfrey Hirst and Feltex wool carpets proudly originate from New Zealand farms, capturing the essence of Aotearoa in a truly exquisite product. Using over 6 million kilos of New Zealand wool yearly, we stand as the world's largest wool carpet manufacturer. Our process involves cleaning the wool, spinning it into yarn at our Oamaru and lower Hutt mills and finally tufting it in Aukland, resulting in high-quality carpets that mirror our local conditions and design trends.

Today, allow us to introduce you to one of our growers Matangi Station. Nestled amidst Hawke's Bay's iconic landscapes of Mt Erin and Te Mata Peak, Matangi embodies mystic beauty: craggy mountains, rolling hills, fertile river flats and 2.5 kilometres of river frontage. Matangi, meaning 'breeze' in Maori, perfectly describes this haven, especially during Hawke's Bay's scorching summers.

Australian owner Robert Haselsteiner and Jamie Gaddum share a vision to provide top-quality New Zealand Angus beef exclusively for Kiwis, not for export. Their sheep play a crucial role maintaining pastures during the colder months for fresh grass, benefiting both cattle and ewes during lambing.

Matangi Station like many in New Zealand, thrives as a family affair. Jamie and Nicky Gaddum, along with their sons Mas and Oscar, manage the farm. They focus on progressive farming practices and making their farm environmentally sustainable. The Gaddums and Haselsteiners plant thousands of native trees annually and secure gullies and streams.
